Pray for Widows and Abandoned Children

Pray for Widows and Abandoned Children

Visit orphans and widows in their distress—this is what God tells us is pure, undefiled religion (see James 1:27). In other words, take care of them, make sure they are doing well, especially in their time of great need. Yet in so many regions across the globe, widows and orphans endure horrendous abuse of various kinds.

According to the Loomba Foundation, “In many countries, when women lose their husbands, they are deprived of their possessions and their dignity, subjected to degrading treatment and excluded or marginalized in the community. Their children often forego any education and are forced to support themselves and their families through child labor, begging and prostitution.”1

For more than 40 years, GFA World has been honouring God’s heart for widows and abandoned children by caring for them in their distress. GFA workers visit, encourage and provide for their needs, showing widows and abandoned children how much they are valued and loved—contrary to how others in their society treat them.

Please join us as we pray to our Heavenly Father on behalf of the many widows and abandoned children in need.

Pray Widows Are Treated with Love, Care

Pray Widows Are Treated with Love, Care

Losing a spouse comes with deep grief and heartache. For widows in Asia and Africa, that grief is often compounded by the sudden reality that they are no longer seen as women worthy of love and care from their relatives and friends. Years—even centuries—of traditions have stigmatized and marginalized widows so that they are frequently pushed away; seen as cursed; and forced to perform rituals that demean their humanity, such as drinking water their dead husband’s body was cleansed with or being forced to sleep with a stranger to break the bond they had with their deceased husband.2 But there are people, such as GFA workers, who go against societal norms to embrace and treat widows with the respect and human dignity they deserve.

Please pray God transforms people’s minds and hearts to respect and cherish widowed women. Pray for widows currently undergoing emotional trauma because of the loss of their husbands and the negative treatment they now endure.

Pray for Widows with Dependent Children

Pray for Widows with Dependent Children

Women widowed at a young age who have dependent children face an even greater burden. If a widow’s husband was the only breadwinner, she is suddenly left with a fight for survival for herself and her children. Finding an employer can be difficult because of the social stigma of widowhood; sometimes the only employment widows can find is begging or prostitution. Their children also end up in precarious situations. Many eventually drop out of school to help bring in extra income, which leaves them vulnerable to perpetuating the cycle of poverty or becoming prey to exploitation. Widows need a good support system to help them through the challenges of widowhood while taking care of a family—and GFA workers are there to help them.

Please pray the Lord blesses each young widow with the grace she needs to persevere through challenging situations. Pray she finds a good, safe and stable job that will provide enough—or more than enough—to take care of her family and keep her children in school. Pray God’s people will be a strong support system for young widows.

Pray Abandoned Children Experience Healing, Transformation

Pray Abandoned Children Experience Healing, Transformation

Estimates suggest there are more than 20 million children today who have been abandoned. Children who experience abandonment are often left with emotional and mental trauma that may take years to overcome—if they overcome it at all. Tragically, many abandoned children end up being abused or exploited, which perpetuates the trauma. In their young lives, they have gone through things that no child should ever go through. Yet God is working to bring them healing through GFA workers; hundreds of abandoned children have experienced renewal in Jesus’ love, shown to them through His people.

Please pray these precious children will find healing from the trauma of being abandoned. Pray also God brings these children into safe homes with loving people who will be catalysts for healthy transformation.

Pray for Ministry Among Widows and Children

Pray for Ministry Among Widows and Children

GFA workers are breaking taboos by showing widows that Jesus values them and desires they live an abundant life in Him. They practically care for widows’ needs by providing food and income-generating gifts, cleaning their houses and offering friendship. They also care for abandoned children, letting them know they are safe and loved unconditionally, especially by their Heavenly Father. GFA workers need discernment, wisdom, grace and compassion to minister God’s healing for trauma that may be extremely deep and difficult to overcome.

Pray God fills GFA workers with grace and compassion as they minister His love to widows and children in great need. Pray the Lord grants them discernment to know how to reach out in love to those who may have experienced traumatic situations. Pray that through them, God will bring healing to widows and abandoned children.
