GFA River Walk

The River: Walk for Water is a half-marathon on the Hutt River Trail in Wellington on 28th February 2015, with participants aiming to raise funds for clean water in South Asia.

How Will it Work?

The River: Walk for Water is an event to raise funds for clean water initiatives in Asia. Through participating in the 21km walk, all entrants will raise money to see lives transformed in South Asia through the provision of safe, clean water for communities Gospel for Asia works in.

Entrants will need to register on the event website, then find personal sponsors among their friends and family to fundraise for their part in The River: Walk for Water.

An Achievable Challenge

We want anyone who wants to, to be able to be involved. The walk (or run – you can choose!) isn’t too long. We like to think of it as an "achievable challenge." Entrants can do the full 21km (half-marathon) option or a shorter option if needed.

The walk will be almost entirely on the Hutt River Trail in Wellington, a relatively flat walk on graveled paths. However, that doesn’t mean it will be easy! Entrants will need to do adequate training, and be sure they have appropriate exercise shoes and gear, and that they’re up to a non-stop walk for the distance they plan to walk.

How did it start?

For more than five years, Gospel for Asia’s sister-office in Australia has been organising a marathon event, raising hundreds of thousands of dollars to change the lives of some of the poorest people in South Asia.

Two years ago, a couple of keen Kiwis joined in that marathon and have been taking part ever since. The work of Gospel for Asia and the difference made in communities in Asia inspired them to start a similar event here in New Zealand. With the help of a local Wellington-area church The River: Walk for Water was born.
